Yummy in My Tummy

When Greg and I went to Indy yesterday to get our fingerprints taken, we were finally able to eat at the closest Ethiopian restaurant to Champaign/Urbana--Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant in Indianapolis (http://www.abyssiniarestaurant.com/index.html) Most of you know that I have a pretty limited palette. Going into this international adoption, I knew that I'd eventually have to start to stretch myself and my picky taste buds. So, yesterday was a baby step in that direction. I tried everything on the plate, but only went back for more bites of the wat...a sort of thick, spicy beef stew. Ethiopian food is served on a large pancake shape piece of spongy, tangy "bread" called injera. You pull off a piece of injera and use that (with your right hand) to scoop up the various entries on the plate (see pic above). The injera is a really interesting consistency...not at all like the bread we are used to in America. We had a delicious appetizer of ground beef and various spices tucked inside a fried pastry...reminded me of an egg roll, but was in a triangular shape. I can't remember the name of it, but it was tasty.
