Having people ask us how we came to the decision to adopt has inspired me to share the "story behind the story". We had to write this up for an adoption grant that we applied for last week, so I thought I'd just copy and paste it for our readers as well:
Greg and I both became Christians as children. We were raised in Christian homes and were taught to follow Jesus. As we’ve aged and matured, we developed a keen awareness of Jesus’ love for everyone and our responsibility to share/live that love. This ties into our adoption testimony: we feel responsible as followers of Jesus to obey him in caring for the “least of these”. We’ve been open to adoption since we got married. After we had our last biological child in 2001, Greg got a vasectomy. We knew that if we wanted to add to our family after that, it would be through adoption. Since then, several friends of ours have adopted and we’ve come to witness the miracle that happens when God places precious orphans into families. Last winter, friends of ours were in the process of adopting from Ethiopia. They specifically asked us to consider adoption because they were becoming aware of the orphan crisis the world. This request spurred us to begin to read and research adoption. We definitely could see the need and knew we had the room in our home and family for another child. We felt led to take foster parent classes this past summer and through that really felt confirmation that we were called to give a child a permanent home. At that time, our friends who asked us to consider adoption during the previous winter had just returned from Ethiopia with their two new kids and shared with us all the beautiful children at this particular orphanage that were just waiting for families. We knew we had to act. We contacted Children’s House International (the agency our friends used), looked through their waiting children photolisting…and saw our boy. On September 4, 2009, on our 16th wedding anniversary, we decided to pursue adopting this precious little boy.
